Preparing for nanotechnology

The Mission of the Foresight Institute

Foresight is a nonprofit educational organization formed to help prepare society for anticipated advanced technologies.

Nanotechnology: the Coming Revolution in Molecular Manufacturing

Our primary focus is on molecular nanotechnology: the coming ability to build materials and products with atomic precision. The development of this technology has broad implications for the future of our civilization.

Web Enhancement and the Evolution of Knowledge

Foresight has a special interest in Web Enhancement software to add new features to the Web that are necessary to develop a fully capable hypertext publishing system. This effort reflects our belief that such systems will be sorely needed to improve the evolution of knowledge and to enhance the quality of discussions and decisions.

Foresight Nanotechnology Publications

Foresight publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Foresight Update, to inform a wide audience about both technical and non-technical developments in nanotechnology.

Foresight Update Newsletter

Read the current issue or explore previous issues. Back issues are also available in text versions. Special Foresight Background essays and Briefing documents will also be made available at this Web site.

Nanotechnology Books Available from Foresight

In addition to the publications prepared by Foresight, a number of books about nanotechnology can be purchased from Foresight by mail order. To order from Foresight copies of Nanosystems, Engines of Creation, and other nanotechnology books, fill out an order form.

Foresight Nanotechnology Conferences

1997 Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology

Since 1989, Foresight Institute has sponsored conferences on molecular nanotechnology. The proceedings of two of these conferences are available in book form and can be ordered from Foresight. Information is available on-line about the 1995 Foresight Conference, and about the upcoming 1997 Foresight Conference.

Nanotechnology Prizes and Awards Sponsored by Foresight

Foresight Institute sponsors prizes for work leading to molecular nanotechnology:

"State of the Field" Report on Molecular Nanotechnology

The Foresight Institute's first annual "State of the Field" Report on Molecular Nanotechnology, which will review events and developments of 1996, is now in preparation.

You can help define the contents and coverage of the 1996 review. We'd like to solicit your opinions on what you feel were the most signficant events and developments related to molecular nanotechnology during 1996.

We would like your assessments of the most important results in research and development, policy decisions and program activities in both the public and private sectors, and in particular business and commercial attention. Activities outside the United States are also of particular interest.

Your contributions will help us shape the first "State of the Field" report with an overview of what the molecular nanotechnology community considers to be the most significant events and developments of 1996. In addition, you may be able to point us to items that we haven't thought to include or have not been informed of previously.

So, if you will, submit your choices for the top ten (or more--list all the items you feel deserve coverage) MNT-related events from 1996. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated. Please send your thoughts directly to:

If you send eMail, please include the words "MNT Report 96" in the subject line to aid proper routing of your message.

Please submit your comments by 21 March 1997.

Thanks very much. I look forward to your responses.

The Foresight Family of Organizations

Foresight Institute is a member of the Foresight family of organizations founded to help prepare for nanotechnology and other important future technologies.

Getting Involved

Join Foresight Institute

We invite you to participate in these exciting developments. Through your Foresight membership you'll be kept up-to-date on the latest advances in nanotechnology, and you'll have the opportunity to influence future directions. Nanotechnology is still near the starting point; your actions today can significantly affect the path nanotechnology will follow.

Your support is needed now: advances in nanotechnology are accelerating, and Foresight is expanding to keep pace. Foresight offers three levels of membership involvement.

Free Electronic Membership

Register for a Free Electronic Membership and receive a quarterly email update on what is new at this Web site.

Regular Membership

An annual membership contribution of $35 or more brings you the print version of our publication Foresight Update, various background and briefing papers, and quarterly email annoucements. Information and donation form for Regular Membership in Foresight.

Senior Associate Program

If you'd like a higher level of involvement, you may wish to join our Senior Associate program. By pledging an annual contribution of $250, $500, $1000, or $5000 for five years, you join those most committed to making a difference in nanotechnology. Activities include special publications, online interaction, and meetings. Senior Associates will also be the beta-testers of Foresight's Web Enhancement debate software. Senior Associate Membership Application.

U.S. tax status

Foresight is a 501(c)3 public foundation; contributions are tax-deductible in the U.S. as permitted by law.
