Our primary focus is on molecular nanotechnology: the coming ability to build materials and products with atomic precision. The development of this technology has broad implications for the future of our civilization.

Web Enhancement and the Evolution of Knowledge

Foresight has a special interest in Web Enhancement software to add new features to the Web that are necessary to develop a fully capable hypertext publishing system. This effort reflects our belief that such systems will be sorely needed to improve the evolution of knowledge and to enhance the quality of discussions and decisions.

Nanotechnology Prizes and Awards Sponsored by Foresight

• The first biennial Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology was awarded in 1993 (see Update 17).
• The second biennial Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology was awarded in 1995 (see Update 23).
• The Feynman Grand Prize For Major Advances In Molecular Nanotechnology was announced in 1996 (see Feynman Grand Prize announcement and article in Update 24).
• Recently announced was the Foresight Institute Distinguished Student Award.

"State of the Field" Report on Molecular Nanotechnology

The Foresight Institute's first annual "State of the Field" Report on Molecular Nanotechnology, which will review events and developments of 1996, is now in preparation.

You can help define the contents and coverage of the 1996 review. We'd like to solicit your opinions on what you feel were the most signficant events and developments related to molecular nanotechnology during 1996.

We would like your assessments of the most important results in research and development, policy decisions and program activities in both the public and private sectors, and in particular business and commercial attention. Activities outside the United States are also of particular interest.

Your contributions will help us shape the first "State of the Field" report with an overview of what the molecular nanotechnology community considers to be the most significant events and developments of 1996. In addition, you may be able to point us to items that we haven't thought to include or have not been informed of previously.

So, if you will, submit your choices for the top ten (or more--list all the items you feel deserve coverage) MNT-related events from 1996. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated. Please send your thoughts directly to:

• The Institute for Molecular Manufacturing is a non-profit research organization founded to promote research in nanotechnology and molecular manufacturing. The goal of this organization is that nanotechnology be developed faster.
• The Center for Constitutional Issues in Technology (CCIT) is being formed as a non-profit California corporation created to pursue public policy issues arising from the emergence of new technologies.

Free Electronic Membership

Register for a Free Electronic Membership and receive a quarterly email update on what is new at this Web site.

Regular Membership

An annual membership contribution of $35 or more brings you the print version of our publication Foresight Update, various background and briefing papers, and quarterly email annoucements. Information and donation form for Regular Membership in Foresight.

Senior Associate Program

If you'd like a higher level of involvement, you may wish to join our Senior Associate program. By pledging an annual contribution of $250, $500, $1000, or $5000 for five years, you join those most committed to making a difference in nanotechnology. Activities include special publications, online interaction, and meetings. Senior Associates will also be the beta-testers of Foresight's Web Enhancement debate software.
